fighter jet Dear Veteran,

Thank you for fighting in all the wars for our country.  I really appreciate that you are keeping peace on Earth. We wear a red and black poppy over our heart on Remembrance Day to remember the soldiers who died for us. We are sorry for the hard fight, but are thankful to the soldiers for fighting for us. Thank you for serving our country.

We learned about John McCrae. He went to University to become a doctor. He also liked to write poetry. He wrote a poem that was called, “In Flanders Fields.”  He wrote it because his friend died in war. We also learned about World War 1. Many young men were forced to go to war to serve our country.

The Peace Tower is found on Parliament Hill in Ottawa.  It is a free standing bell tower located in front of the center block of the parliament buildings.  It was built to honour the soldiers who died in World War 1. The tower stands 90.6 meters high. It has a clock with four faces and a group of 53 bells of different sizes. The bells are often heard on special days and ring on Remembrance Day.

In class, we are making a poppy out of clay. We are making it so we can remember those who died for us. We sang the song, “A Wish For Peace,” for our Remembrance Day Assembly on Tuesday, November 10th.  The junior highs did a shadow play for the Remembrance Day Assembly. I really enjoyed the junior high shadow play because they read their speaking parts while they were doing the play.  At 11:00 a.m. we bowed our heads for two minutes of silence to thank the soldiers who died for us in the war.

Great work, Willy! You demonstrated an understanding why Remembrance Day is important – a tribute to soldiers past and present soldiers. I like how you are beginning to add detail to your writing, rather than just telling. You explained why John McCrae wrote the poem and what the Peace Tower symbolizes. I enjoyed the Junior High shadow play as well. Your font colour is easy to read and nice placement of your Remembrance Day pictures. Your poppy picture turned out nicely! Keep working hard, Willy! 🙂
