Dear Veteran,

Thank you for keeping our country safe. I appreciate your service because we have peace and freedom in our country. Thank you for letting us go to school in a peaceful and free environment. Thank you for keeping our families safe. Thank you for handing out poppies so we can show respect.

We learned that we wear a poppy over our heart to show respect. We learned about the Peace Tower. The Peace Tower has 53 bells on it that are different sizes. We learned at the Remembrance Day Service we bow our heads because World War 1 came to an end at eleven o’clock, on November 11th, in1918. We learned that there were over 38 million soldiers that died.

We learned about John McCrae. He was born in Guelph, Ontario in 1872. He wrote a poem called, “In Flanders Fields,” because many of his friends were killed in war. The poem was about what he saw that day. The poem John McCrae wrote became famous all over the world.

We sang a song for Remembrance Day on Tuesday, November 10th. It is called, “A Wish for Peace.”   I liked the grade two’s song.  It was called, “Teaching Peace,” By Red Grammar. At the Remembrance Day Ceremony there was a veteran that had medals on each side of his shirt. When the veteran started to fight in war he was 22 years old. We are making a poppy picture frame and it is made with clay.  We read a story in class called, “A Poppy is to Remember,” because it showed us how hard it was for soldiers to return to home from war. We listened to, “Last Post,” ‘’Reveille,’’ and ‘’Pittance of Time.”

Fantastic job, Paulina! I liked how you kept all of your ideas tied nicely together in paragraph form. I can tell you understand the importance paying your respects to the soldiers on Remembrance Day. Great job explaining what you learned about Remembrance Day. You explained the Peace Tower, why we bow our heads at the Remembrance Day Service, and about John McCrae’s poem. Your poppy picture turned out nicely! Nice job with your pictures depicting Remembrance Day and your font colour. Keep up the great work, Paulina! 🙂
